Bears pick up historic win, 2-1, over Gulf Coast

Southwest split a pair of MACJC South Division soccer matches with visiting Mississippi Gulf Coast Tuesday as the Bears picked up an historic 2-1 win and the Lady Bears fell 4-0.

The Bears’ win, the first over Gulf Coast in school history, moved Southwest to 2-8-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the Division. Gulf Coast, the defending state champions, fell to 4-8-2 and 3-4.

Southwest took a 1-0 lead in the men’s game when Anthony DeJardine flew through the air to head the ball to teammate Jake Saltalamacchia who then found the back of the goal at the 12:00 mark. The lead held up until the 39th minute when the Bulldogs’ Ethan Paschal scored to tie the game at 1-1.

The game remained tied until 69:00 when, with Jeremy Foster assisting, Saltalamacchia again found the back of the goal for what proved to be the game winner.

Southwest keeper Will Evans saved seven of eight shots on goal.

“It was our best performance of the year,” said Southwest head coach Drew Gallant of his team’s big victory. “We have improved every game and it showed today. We never gave up any opportunities and (we) created a lot of goal-scoring opportunities (for ourselves).”

Southwest takes to the home field for the last time this season on Friday when they host Jones County. Game times are 2:00 for the ladies and 4:00 for the men.
