Lady Bears fall at home to East Central

The Lady Bears dropped a 75-65 decision to visiting East Central Monday night while the Southwest men got back on the winning track with an 83-64 win.
 
The Lady Bears (3-11, 0-3) fell behind 9-0 before a Cassie Berry bucket put them on the board 9-2 with 16:36 to go in the first half. The Lady Warriors (1-11, 1-2) then went on another streak to take a 17-3 lead with just over 15:00 on the clock.
 
Southwest then found their offense and went on a 22-6 run and took a 25-23 lead with 3:50 left in the half when Shaniece Sheffield found the bottom of the basket from the left side of the floor. The Lady Bears held on to the lead and went into intermission with a 30-28 advantage.
 
In the second half, Southwest extended its lead to five points, 35-30, with 17:02 on the clock. The Lady Warriors then regained the stride, outscoring Southwest 11-4 in just under four minutes to go up top 41-39 with 13:23 left in the game and were never headed. An Inessa Adams free throw put the visitors up by 13, 75-62, with 0:33 to play and they went home with the 10-point victory.
 
Sheffield and Shanekqua Bibbs both scored 19 points on the night to lead Southwest in scoring. Berry was also in double figures with 13 points.
 
Julencia Brown added four points while Alexis Avery and Casey Brumfield both netted three. Lacey Orr and Taylor Williams both added two points. The Lady Bears made 13 of 23 free throws.
 
East Central’s Ja’Monica Orton led all scorers with 27 points in the game. The Lady Warriors hit 13 of 21 free throws.
 
The Southwest teams hit the road for their next action as they head to Perkinston on Monday to face Mississippi Gulf Coast. Game times are 6:00 for the ladies and 8:00 for the men.
