Bears clinch Playoffs with win over Delta

Southwest Mississippi Baseball hosted Mississippi Delta on Tuesday, April 28th for the final home games of the regular season.

Southwest won game one 10-5 and lost game two 6-9.

With the win in game one, the Bears secured a playoff spot in the Region 23 playoffs.

Matt Newman started on the mound in game one for Southwest.

Newman pitched 5.1 innings with 3 strikeouts.

Easton Boyte pitched the next 2.2 innings with 3 strikeouts and 1 hit and 0 runs allowed. Boyte picked up the win for the Bears.

Dom Smith came in for the final inning and picked up 3 strikeouts.

Mississippi Delta jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead over the Bears in the first inning.

Playing from behind, the Bears were down 5-0 when they finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The first Southwest run came on a Cam Bolden single to score Justin Domiano and move the score to 5-1.

Once the Bears got the ball rolling they didn't look back.

Southwest added 2 more runs in the next inning on a Hayes Loper single and a steal home by Tanner Moore to move the score to 5-3.

The Bears took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a huge 6-run inning.

A hit by pitch and pair of singles loaded the bases for Southwest.

JD Hidalgo scored on a passed ball to make the score 5-4.

Next, Justin Domiano grounded into a fielder's choice to score Sam Tumminello and tie the game at 5-5.

Robbie Hokamp grounded out shortly after to score Luke Simmons and give the Bears a 6-5 lead over Mississippi Delta.

Tanner Moore scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 7-5.

Two more Bear runs scored when Justin Domiano scored on an error by the shortstop then Drew Swan scored on a passed ball to put the Southwest lead at 4 runs up 9-5.

The final Southwest run came in the eighth when another Cam Bolden single scored Robbie Hokamp to make the score 10-5.

Dom Smith held off the Delta offense in the top of the ninth with 3 strikeouts to secure to 10-5 Southwest win and lock the Bears into the playoffs.

Cam Bolden, Luke Simmons, and Sam Tumminello led the team with 2 hits apiece. Tanner Moore, Hayes Loper, Justin Domiano, and Robbie Hokamp each had 1 hit.

Cam Bolden led with 2 RBIs. Hayes Loper, Justin Domiano, and Robbie Hokamp each had 1 RBI.

Justin Domiano (x2), Cam Bolden, and Tanner Moore all stole bases in game one.

Rhyson Carroway started at pitcher in game two for the Bears.

Carroway pitched 4.1 innings with 3 strikeouts.

Andrew Hoff relieved before Alden Spencer came in for 1.1 innings.

Camp Segrest pitched the final 1.1 innings with 2 strikeouts and no hits or runs allowed.

Southwest was down 2-0 going into the bottom of the second when JD Hidalgo hit a 3-run homerun to take a 3-2 lead over Delta.

The Delta runs kept coming however as the Bears found themselves down 8-3 going into the bottom of the fifth.

JD Hidalgo scored on a Sam Tumminello sac fly to make the score 8-4 before Delta added another run in the sixth.

Cam Bolden scored on an error in the sixth to bring the score to 9-5, but the Bears would only manage one more run in the bottom of the seventh and fall 9-6 to Mississippi Delta in game two.

Drew Swan led the team with 2 hits. Tanner Moore, Hayes Loper, and JD Hidalgo each had 1 hit.

JD Hidalgo's hit was a 3-run homerun.

Hidalgo led the team with 3 RBIs. Drew Swan and Sam Tumminello had 1 each.

Cam Bolden (x2), JD Hidalgo (x2), and Drew Swan each stole bases in game two.

"We finished up the year with a win that got us in the postseason for the third time in four years. I'm always pleased when that's the result," said Head Coach Jack Edmonson, "our team battled all year. We've won a lot of close games. We think that will help us in the postseason. We are going to do our best to get our legs under us and be ready to be wide open Monday."

"Special thanks to all of the fans who came out to support our guys this season. Fans create a great atmosphere for the players to play in," said Coach Edmonson.

The Bears finished the regular season 29-23 overall and 13-15 in conference play. 29 wins is the second most all time for Southwest Baseball in the regular season.

The Bears prepare for their playoff game on Monday, May 4th. The opponent and time are to be announced.
