Bears shutout East Mississippi

Southwest Mississippi Baseball traveled to Scooba on Tuesday, March 2nd to play Pearl River and East Mississippi in a doubleheader losing to Pearl River 4-7 and beating East Mississippi 3-0.

Matt Newman started on the mound for the Bears against Pearl River.

Newman pitched 6.0 innings with 4 strikeouts and 3 runs allowed.

Dom Smith pitched the final inning with 2 strikeouts and picked up the loss for Southwest.

Pearl River jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the third inning, but the Bears quickly answered back with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the third to tie the game.

Southwest loaded the bases after a Tanner Moore single followed by a walk and hit by pitch.

A Sam Tumminello ground out scored Tanner Moore. JD Hidalgo scored next on a wild pitch. The final run came when a Cam Bolden sacrifice scored Drew Swan.

The game stayed close until the top of the seventh when Pearl River up 4 runs to take a 7-3 lead over Southwest.

The Bears managed one more run in the final inning on a JD Hidalgo homerun before falling to Pearl River 4-7.

JD Hidalgo (HR), Tanner Moore, and Johnathan Miller all had 1 hit in the game.

Luke Simmons stole a base in the contest.

Against East Mississippi, Alden Spencer started at pitcher for the Bears.

Spencer pitched 3.1 innings with 3 strikeouts, 0 hits, and 0 runs allowed. Spencer also picked up the win for Southwest.

Wyatt Garrett pitched 3.2 innings with 4 strikeouts and 0 runs allowed picking up the save for the Bears.

The Bears did the scoring early with all 3 runs coming in the first three innings.

In the first, Landon French singled to score Drew Swan and Luke Simmons.

In the third, a Drew Swan single scored Tanner Moore.

Neither team would score the rest of the game.

Drew Swan had 2 hits in the game while JD Hidalgo and Landon French each had 1.

Drew Swan, JD Hidalgo, and Tanner Moore all stole a base.

"It's always hard to go on the road and win two games. We almost did that. We are hoping to be healthy rolling into conference play and are excited about what we can do," said Head Coach Jack Edmonson.

The Bears(15-6) play at home on Friday, March 6th in a three-way with Southeastern Iowa Community College and Delgado Community College.
