Bear Baseball sweeps Holmes for Coach Edmonson's 100th win

Southwest Mississippi Baseball hosted Holmes on Saturday, March 21st in a doubleheader that saw the Bears win 6-2 and 14-5.

Matt Newman started on the mound for Southwest in game one.

Newman pitched 7.0 innings for the Bears with 4 strikeouts on 2 hits and 0 runs allowed. Newman also picked up the win for Southwest.

Wyatt Garrett came in for relief before Nik Carney finished the game.

Carney had 4 strikeouts in 2.0 innings pitched and picked up the save for the Bears.

Southwest led the entire game and through seven innings the Bears were up 5-0 over the Bulldogs.

In the third inning, a Drew Swan single scored Tanner Moore and Tristain Haynes to put Southwest up 2-0.

In the fourth, a Tanner Moore single scored Johnathan Miller moving the score to 3-0.

In the sixth, another Tanner Moore single again scored Johnathan Miller.

The fifth run came on Justin Domiano scoring on a wild pitch in the seventh inning.

The Bulldogs put up two runs in the top of the eighth, and those runs would be their only runs of the game.

The final insurance run for Southwest came when Tanner Moore scored on an error by the pitcher in the eighth inning putting the Bears up 6-2.

Southwest pitching would close out the game and give the Bears the 6-2 win.

Tanner Moore had a massive 4 hit game as well as 3 bases stolen, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBIs.

Six other Bears had 1 hit each in game one.

Hayes Loper had a triple as his 1 hit.

Justin Domiano also stole a base in the contest.

Game two saw an impressive 14-5 Bear win.

Alden Spencer started at pitcher for Southwest and picked up the win.

Spencer pitched 4.2 innings with 3 strikeouts and only 2 runs allowed.

Dom Smith also pitched 1.1 innings with 3 strikeouts.

Easton Boyte pitched the final inning and had 2 strikeouts of his own.

The Bears started the game with a huge 5-run first inning and never looked back.

They also put up a 3-run fourth inning and 6-run sixth inning.

Tanner Moore, JD Hidalgo, and Tristain Haynes each had 2 hits.

Justin Domiano, Drew Swan, Cam Bolden, and Johnathan Miller had 1 hit each in the contest.

Tristain Haynes (x2), Tanner Moore (x2), Drew Swan, JD Hidalgo, and Johnathan Miller all stole bases in the game.

JD Hidaglo had a triple and Johnathan Miller had a double.

Justin Domiano and JD Hidalgo each scored 3 runs as well.

Justin Domiano, Johnathan Miller and Cam Bolden all had 2 RBIs.

Tanner Moore, JD Hidalgo, Drew Swan, and Tristain Haynes each had 1.

"We had a really good week. Our coaches challenged our guys this week, and they responded in a really positive way. We had several people who really stepped up and played well when we needed it most. Our guys are tough," said Head Coach Jack Edmonson.

The game one win over Holmes marked Coach Edmonson's 100th career win.

"I'm extremely proud to have the opportunity to lead this program. There might be 100 wins by my name, but there wouldn't be any without Jesus, my family, the players, admin, and so many others that have poured into Southwest Athletics. I'm proud to be along for the ride," said Coach Edmonson when asked about passing 100 wins.

The Bears (20-11, 4-4*conference) will host Baton Rouge Community College on Monday, March 23rd for Sophomore Night.
