Bears fall to ICC in battle for 1 seed

| By:
Southwest Mississippi's Men's Basketball traveled to Fulton on February 5th to take on Itawamba for a chance at the #1 seed in the conference but fell short in a 70-86 loss on the road.

The Bears started off slow quickly finding themselves in a 4-11 deficit but soon closed the gap bringing the game within 1 point at 12-13 with 12:40 left on the clock in the first half.

Buckets continued to fall for both sides as Itawamba slowly began to pull away building a lead of 39-27 at the half.

Itawamba kept up their momentum in the second half growing the lead even more.

A few good defensive plays by the Bears turned into three pointers from Courterius Scott who had 3 on the night.

Southwest began to heat up in the scoring in the final 10:00 of the contest, but it was not enough to overcome the large lead Itawamba had built leading to an Itawamba win of 86-70.

Courterius Scott had 18 points on the night followed by Cy Merrett with 11 points. Leano Rolle and Robert Flantroy II each had 10 points and 2 three pointers as well.

"I thought we came out of the gate pretty locked in. Guarded really well to start the game. But we didn't score it at an efficient rate. And once they hit a couple of shots in a row near the end of the first half we started to let the game slip away a little," said Head Coach Corey Schmidt, "Something we have talked about a lot throughout the year is we can't let any lack of offense affect our defense, and that's exactly what happened. To start the second half, we were just not as locked in on the defensive end as we needed to be, and they went on a run."

"The Biggest key to the game was their offensive rebounds. They battled on the glass and we did not play with enough physicality in that area and it hurt us," said Coach Schmidt.

The Bears (10-12, 4-2*conference) look to bounce back on Saturday, February 7th when they play Mississippi Delta at home.
