The momentum built from Tuesday's road win at East Mississippi unfortunately didn't carry over to Friday for the Bears as they put up a fight but couldn't get the consistency they needed, falling 7-2 to the No. 15 Gulf Coast Bulldogs.
"Gulf Coast, unfortunately, we caught them when they are coming off of two conference losses and I don't know if that has happened in the past 10 years," Southwest head coach Zach Mills said. "I think that they were hungry and we were too, we were excited about this game."
The Bears (4-4-1, 1-2-1 MACCC) used some of that excitement to their advantage, taking an early 1-0 lead in just the fourth minute as Ilan Marin got a pass from Max Ruelke and danced around a defender before sending a shot into the net from just outside the box.
The lead, however, did not last long for the hosts as Gulf Coast drew even in the seventh minute with a goal. The Bears tried to work more magic and break the tie but the Bulldogs shut down the opportunities.
Gulf Coast jumped ahead in the 18
th minute before adding a third goal on the night in the 34
th, taking a 3-1 lead into halftime
A little more than 2:00 into the second half the Bear deficit grew to three as the Bulldogs rallied once again with a goal.
It was answered, however, a little less than 5:00 later as Ruelke stepped up with another assist this time on a corner kick which was knocked in by Cooper Powell cutting the Gulf Coast lead in half at 4-2.
Unfortunately, though, the goal didn't create enough momentum for Southwest as Gulf Coast scored three additional goals in the 67
th, 74
th and 89
th minutes to make the score the eventual final.
Southwest will be back in action on Friday as the Bears visit Hinds at 7 p.m.
