Box Score The month of September has been good for the Bears as they stayed hot, recording their third-consecutive win Saturday, out-lasting the visiting Georgia Military Bulldogs 4-3 in the final test before the beginning of conference play next week.
"Georgia Military is a good program," Southwest head coach Zach Mills said. "We made a few mistakes and that is what non-conference games are all about, testing and challenging us and getting us ready for conference."
Right out of the gate, the Bears (3-2) displayed an aggressive approach, and it paid off in just the fourth minute as Brian Sanchez found the back of the net on an assist from Ilan Marin, putting Southwest up 1-0.
The momentum, unfortunately, did not last as the Bulldogs drew even just three minutes later making the score 1-1.
Both teams continued to battle as the first half minutes ticked away. GMC took a lead in the 39
th minute on a goal but Southwest answered right back three minutes later when Jesther Borjas found Max Ruelke across the middle before the latter sent a rocket past the Bulldog goalkeeper, tying the match at 2.
In similar fashion to the first half, the Bears displayed more aggression early in the second and 10:00 into the period they capitalized as Sanchez not only prevented a ball from going out on the back line but during his save, he sent a pass back across the middle to Borjas who scored making it a 3-2 game in favor of the hosts.
"I saw Jester," Sanchez said. "I saw him out of the corner of my eye and I know him very well and we worked on this a bunch of times and he just made the run and thankfully I saw him and it was a great goal, great connection."
The Bears added one more in the 84
th minute as Yanis Rachidi scored in his season debut, pushing the Southwest lead to 4-2.
Three minutes later, GMC made things interesting, inching closer with a goal on a penalty shot making the score 4-3.
In the end, however, the Bear defense held its ground and prevented the Bulldogs from moving any closer as Southwest held on for the win.
The Bears open MACCC play Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Co-Lin.
