Box Score Mother Nature made her presence known in the Southwest's regular season opener against Jacksonville College Friday and unfortunately for the Bears, they did not get to conclude their contest against the Jaguars as lightning prompted a delay and an eventual cancellation with 28:00 to go thus resulting in a 2-1 loss.
"It's terrible that it counts as a loss because we could have easily come back to tie or win," Southwest head coach Zach Mills said. "It could have been a different outcome if we played the last 30 (minutes)."
The Bears (0-1) came out trying to set the tone early, but the Jaguars unfortunately stayed one step ahead pushing the ball down on the home end of the pitch for most of the early stages of the match.
A little more than 5:00 into the contest, Southwest found itself down 1-0 following a goal by Jacksonville.
Despite being down, the Bears remained focus and battled back. Their efforts paid off a little more than 3:00 later when Ilan Marin maneuvered around two defenders deep in Jaguar territory before finding fellow freshman Elijah Davis on a cross resulting in a goal, tying the match at 1.
"Everybody has been working hard and I believe a couple of other guys had some chances but to see Ilan with his quick show of magic and to get the assist to Elijah, I'm happy to see it," Mills said.
About 13:00 into the second half, the Bears lost focus and the Jaguars capitalized putting Southwest down 2-1.
Not long afterward, the weather took a turn for the worse which resulted in the the remainder of the match being canceled marking it as a final.
The Bears will be back in action a week from Saturday as they will face Mobile JV on the road at 1 p.m.
