Dr. Shane Hinckley named new Southwest Golf Head Coach

Dr. Shane Hinckley has been named the new Southwest Head Golf Coach. He replaces Jay O'Hern who recently resigned from the position.

In addition to his duties as head coach, Hinckley will still practice chiropractic, as well.

Not long after accepting the job, Hinckley hit the ground running on the recruiting trail, offering two players quickly.

"I'm pumped!" said an excited Hinckley who added that he is already experiencing different emotions as the coach. "And I'm a big softy and I had two kids already that when I offered them scholarships, they got emotional. It's been really rewarding for me already to hear the emotion in these kids' voices."

Hinckley is certainly no stranger to the sport as he brings nearly 40 years of experience to the job. He's taking over at Southwest after completing 10 years at nearby Parklane Academy as a volunteer golf coach.

In addition, Hinckley  –  who holds Level 3 Certification at the Titleist Performance Institute – was also caddy for two years on the LPGA Tour and worked for Tiger Woods' former golf coach in Hank Haney in Houston, TX.

"I've been around golf a long time and I've seen some really good swings," he said.

Looking back on his experience at Parklane, Hinckley said that there is one glaring aspect that is different when comparing it to what he will endure at Southwest.

"I've got one sport athletes now where as in the past with the boys at Parklane, I had three and four-sport athletes that weren't able to dedicate their full schedule to golf," he said. "Now I've got guys that every day, we will be playing and practicing golf, doing drills and working out in the morning."

An added quality that Hinckley wants his players to have is course management.

"It's best to have a plan and a strategy when you go to the golf course or that hole and say 'here's how I'm going to play this. I'm going to hit shot A to here and hit shot B to there,'" he said. "A lot of people don't go to the golf course with a particular strategy."

Hinckley says that he will put a heavy emphasis on academics with his student athletes, as well.

He is also thrilled to announce that Jake Easley will join him as a volunteer assistant coach saying, "I'm super excited about having him help me with the younger guys."
