It was a good day at the office Wednesday for the Bears as they got multiple standout performances in a sweep of visiting Hinds as they took Game 1 5-4 before shutting out the Eagles in Game 2, 10-0.
"It was a really big day, our guys knew that it was going to be a really big day for us," Southwest head coach Jack Edmonson said. "The first game was tough, we had to fight through it, grind through it."
In Game 1, the Bears (18-26, 8-8 MACCC) fell behind early as Hinds pushed two runs across in the first inning.
But Southwest fought back in the second with two runs of its own on an RBI double from Cam Bolden scoring Lane Steinwinder followed by a Davis Knight ground out bringing Cody Presley home, tying the game at 2.
The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Eagles scored another two runs in the third to jump ahead 4-2.
That score stayed true until the eighth when Justin Domiano singled to right, allowing Gage Hinnant to touch home before Trace Roy added an RBI single of his own scoring Steinwinder and Domiano putting the Bears up for the first time at 5-4.
Nik Carney, who came on in relief and got the win with a strong outing, was relieved in the ninth by Davis Knight who got the final out and the save, preserving the win.
Carney went 6.2 innings giving up only two hits and one walk while striking out five.
Roy led the offense with two hits and two RBIs.
In Game 2, the Bears got a lights-out pitching performance from Dawson Richard as the sophomore and Nicholls State commit, went all 6.0 innings giving up only four hits while striking out six.
He retired six of the first nine batters he faced and did not allow the Eagles to any consistency offensively.
The Bear offense stepped up in the second inning to provide some insurance. Presley grounded out allowing Steinwinder to score before Tanner Moore singled in Roy making the score 2-0. After Bolden scored on an error, Zayne Landry hit a sacrifice fly to right allowing Moore to come home increasing the lead to 4-0.
Two additional strong innings from Richard gave way to two more runs for the Bears in the fourth. Jake Meilstrup hit an RBI single before he scored later in the inning after stealing home, pushing the Southwest lead to 6-0.
The Bears kept pouring it on in the fifth as Bolden hit an RBI double before he scored on an Eagle error making it an 8-0 contest.
Southwest pushed its final two runs across in the sixth on a Roy sacrifice fly to left followed by a bases-loaded walk to Bolden which provided the winning run for the Bears.
Roy once again led the offense with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
After the game, Roy commented on his big five-hit day, helping his team pick up the sweep.
"It is just fun, to be able to do that," he said. "The preparation I think is what that comes up to, being able to perform on game day. It is just being free and having fun."
As a team, the Bears were an incredible 17-of-17 on stolen base attempts led by five from Meilstrup, four from Moore and three each from Bolden and Hinnant.
The win marks the third-consecutive for the Bears who will look to continue their good play on Saturday, hosting Itawamba at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
