Other than individual rough innings in both of Tuesday's games, Southwest played a good brand of baseball at home against No. 8 Jones. But the innings were tough to overcome as Southwest fell 12-1 in Game 1 and 4-2 in Game 2.
"We had a good day of baseball minus those two innings," Southwest head coach Jack Edmonson said. "I wish we could not have those innings and we would like where we are right now. But there were a lot of good things that we saw today. A lot of people played well and competed well and that is a good club that we faced."
In the opener, the Bears (19-29, 9-11 MACCC) found themselves down 2-0 in the first inning, but cut the deficit in half in the third as Jake Meilstrup singled and touched home on the ensuing at bat when Gage Hinnant followed suit with a single of his own, making it a 2-1 game.
That score stayed true until the seventh when the Bobcats went on a run, plating 12 runs, putting the Bears behind the 8-ball. Southwest was unable to respond in the bottom half of the inning, ending the game.
Hinnant led the Bears with one hit and one RBI.
In Game 2, Southwest made a statement right out of the gate. After starter Dawson Richard retired the side in order in the first, striking out two in the process, Meilstrup -- from the leadoff spot --Â quickly made it a 1-0 lead for the Bears following a solo home run to right.
Richard added two more strikeouts in the second, keeping the Bobcats off of the board.
In the third, however, Southwest lost the momentum as Jones went on a run to score four making it a 4-1 deficit for the hosts.
The Bears tried to rally and get back in the ball game but could not find the consistent offense it needed until the seventh when Southwest pushed a run across after Lane Steinwinder was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded cutting the deficit in half at 4-2.
But the rally was unfortunately halted as the Bobcats held on for the win.
Meilstrup led the Bears going 2-for-3 with a home run. Justin Domiano also finished with two hits for Southwest.
The Bears return to action on Friday at Holmes. Game 1 is set to begin at 2 p.m.
