Despite putting forth a strong effort in Wednesday's doubleheader against No. 7 Co-Lin, the Lady Bears could not find the consistency they needed against the Wolves, falling 11-2 in Game 1 and 14-6 in Game 2. The games were part of the 2025 Coca-Cola Challenge.
"We had opportunities," Southwest head coach Shea Johnson said. "And those opportunities we have to take advantage of. I'm not taking anything away from Co-Lin, they are the No. 7 team in the nation for a reason. Hats off to them. But I told the girls that they fought really hard."
The Lady Bears' (8-18, 2-6 MACCC) Corin Talbot was locked in a pitching duel with Wolves starter Emily Richarde as neither allowed a run through the first three innings despite both teams threatening.
Co-Lin unfortunately broke through in the fourth with a pair of runs putting Southwest down. The deficit grew to 4-0 in the fifth before the Wolves added three more in the top of the sixth, making it a 7-0 game.
Southwest scored its first run in the sixth. Alyssa Leggett led off with a single and touched home two batters later when pinch hitter Taylor Dunbar singled to left.
Co-Lin rallied once again in the seventh with four runs increasing its lead to 11-1. Southwest tried to mount a comeback in the bottom half of the inning, getting one run when Allie Ladnier grounded out but it wasn't enough as the Wolves claimed the win.
Leggett led the Lady Bears with two hits and a run scored.
In Game 2, Southwest fell behind 2-0 in the first inning. Co-Lin added to its lead in the third with another pair of runs, putting the Lady Bears down 4-0.
But in the bottom half of the inning, Southwest responded, and in a big way. Maggie Wilks, Liberty Gillihan and Ladnier all got on base via an error, a single and a walk, respectively. Wilks scored during the ensuing at bat when Leggett reached on an error. Next up was Talbot who allowed Gillihan to score on a sacrifice fly, cutting the Co-Lin lead in half at 4-2.
Following a Kate Clements single, Erin Acey added one of her own bringing Ladnier and Leggett home, tying the game at 4. Clements later scored on a passed ball before a bases-loaded walk to Gillihan added another run, making it a 6-4 lead for the Lady Bears.
The momentum, unfortunately, didn't last long as the Wolves plated four in the top of the fourth to regain the upper hand at 8-6.
The added six more in the fifth, making the score the eventual final.
Clements led Southwest going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Gillihan had two hits, one run scored and an RBI and Acey posted a hit a run scored and two RBIs.
The Lady Bears will host Coahoma Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
