Southwest entered Thursday's doubleheader at Baton Rouge riding high after Tuesday's sweep of John Melvin at home. But the Lady Bears could not keep the momentum going, dropping two games to host Baton Rouge, 5-4 in Game 1 and 7-2 in Game 2.
"Is there disappointment…yes," Southwest head coach Shea Johnson said. "I think that this team is destined for good things. We just didn't get the breaks that we needed."
Allie Ladnier got the start for Southwest (2-6) in Game 1 at got to work immediately, striking out the side in the bottom of the first.
She got help from the offense in the top of the second as Erin Acey singled to left, scoring Alyssa Leggett putting Southwest up 1-0.
Ladnier ran into a bit of trouble in the third as Baton Rouge loaded the bases with two outs but a fly ball ended the inning and the scoring threat.
Strong innings in the third and fourth from Ladnier kept Baton Rouge off of the scoreboard. Unfortunately, in the fifth, Southwest could not add to its 1-0 lead.
That changed, however, in the sixth. Abbey Pevey and Leggett got on base via singles. Pinch runner Malley Chase Faulkner came on for Pevey and scored later in the inning when Taylor Dunbar reached on an error. Two at bats later, Maggie Wilks doubled to left allowing pinch runner Gabby Carr to score increasing the Southwest lead to 4-0.
Unfortunately, in the bottom of the seventh, Baton Rouge rallied, not only to tie the game at 4 but push the game-winning run across.
Wilks led Southwest going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Leggett also went 3-for-4 with one run scored.
In Game 2, Southwest fell behind early and could not fully recover. Baton Rouge plated two runs in the first inning on a single and a Southwest error.
After Southwest was unable to answer in the top of the second, Baton Rouge added to its lead with a pair of RBI singles and an RBI ground out.
The visitors rallied in the fourth to cut into the lead. Kate Clements brought Wilks home on a sacrifice fly before Pevey singled to center, allowing Liberty Gillihan to score making it a 6-2 game. Unfortunately, Southwest could not keep the momentum going.
Baton Rouge plated the final run in the sixth on an RBI single making the score the eventual final.
Southwest will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to Mobile, AL to face Bishop State at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
