Both the Southwest Men's and Women's Tennis teams knew they had a tough task ahead of them Friday, a pair of ranked Jones teams. And even though the Bears played tough, they could not get past the Bobcats, falling 9-0 on the men's side and 9-0 on the women's. The Jones Men entered the match ranked No. 13 while the Women were ranked No. 10.
After the matches, Southwest head coach Dean Clower was pleased with how his teams played against such a tough opponent, adding that the arrow is still pointing in the right direction.
"The level of play was determined by the fight that they had," he said. "They see now how much fight and hard work pays off. It didn't pay off in the result we wanted but it paid off in the result that we got better."
Among the highlights on the women's side was the play of No. 1 singles Martina Troncoso who battled against Helen Hernandez. She unfortunately lost the first set 6-1 but put up a fight in the second, falling 6-4.
On the men's side, No. 1 singles Mansur Khajimuradov, ranked No. 42 nationally, faced No. 4-ranked Matias Ruiz in a close battle. After Khajimuradov took the first set 7-5, he unfortunately came up short in the final two, falling 6-2 in each.
Southwest has a quick turnaround and will be back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. hosting Coastal Alabama – North.
