Bears overwhelm Baton Rouge Post Grad, 117-62

The Bears got off to a hot start Thursday night, quickly building a quick double digit lead against the Baton Rouge Post Grad Aces enroute to a 117-62 win.

Sophomore Dawson Knox hit a three pointer on the very first possession of the game and Southwest had all the momentum early. After a Leano Rolle steal and slam to make the score 7-0, the Aces called a quick timeout. The Bears would then go on to build a 17-5 lead, but the Aces showed a little life after that going on a 12-0 run to tie the score after some sloppy turnovers by the Bears led to some easy layups for them in transition.

The Bears steadied themselves after that run and went on to build a 25-point lead at the half, 58-33, with four players already in double figures. Jaylen Haliburton, Chidi Nwosu and Knox each had 12 points at the break hitting two three pointers a piece. Leano Rolle had 11 points.

The lone sour spot for the Bears (5-6) in the first half was their free throw shooting as they were only 5-12 from the charity stripe.

The second half started much like the first with the Bears coming out fast and continuing to build on their lead. Sophomore Courterius Scott hit freshman Andre Ngomabie with a nice pass in transition for a fast break dunk early in the frame. Scott found Rolle on a nice dish to the corner a couple minutes later, and after a nice fake Rolle drove to the basket for a powerful two-handed slam that ignited the home crowd ignited. The lead had ballooned to 30 by the 16:00 mark.

Rolle again brought the crowd to their feet later in the half with a flying one-handed slam on an out of bounds play. Sophomore Robert Flantroy made the pass to Rolle who came charging down the middle of the lane and leaped for the one-handed catch and throw down. And Rolle wasn't done there. He would later go on a run of his own hitting three consecutive three pointers. He finished the game with a team high 26 points with four three pointers.

Much of the second half the game was out of hand, but the Bears never really let their foot off the gas due to the large lead. They continued to execute and move the basketball which led to their evenly distributed scoring output. The Bears ended the game with five in double figures, with Robert Flantroy joining the group from the first half, and had over 25 assists which was a season high.

The Bears have a week off for final exams before returning action down in Panama City on December 12 to take on top 10 ranked Gulf Coast State CC in the first day of the Gulf Coast Classic. Tipoff is set for 7:00.
