Bears fall short against Southern-Shreveport

The Bears gave it all they had Monday night in the opening round of the Coca-Cola Classic, but it was not enough as the visiting Southern-Shreveport Jaguars held on for a 65-59 win.

Things were nip and tuck through most of the first half with four ties and seven lead changes. The Bears (2-5) led by no more than two points while Shreveport biggest lead, 29-22, came with under 1:00 left before halftime.

The visitors seem to put the game away in the second half, outscoring the Bears 12-5 to take a 41-27 lead with 14:58 still to play. But, the Bears would not give in easily.

A pair of free throws from Courterius Scott started the Bears on a 16-2 run,  capped by a Jaylen Haliburton three-pointer to tie the game at 43-all with 12:25 remaining.

After Shreveport went up 48-45, the teams again traded baskets before a massive Leano Rolle dunk put the Bears ahead 59-57 with 3:13 on the clock.

Shreveport, however, would score the final eight points of the game to escape with the win.

"It was a frustrating game," said Bears' head man Corey Schmidt post-game. "I didn't think out guys were focused enough on the game plan. We knew they (the Jaguars) were going to going to pressure and we didn't handle it well. At the end of the day, I think they just played harder than us."

Scott led the Bears' offense with 18 points. Cy Merrett netted 14 points while Rolle totaled 11 points.

The Bears went 12-20 from the free throw line.

The Bears close out the Classic Tuesday night against Baton Rouge Community College. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30.
