Bears run out of steam late, fall at Itawamba

Box Score Earlier in the year, the Bears picked up a hard-fought 3-2 win at home over Itawamba. In Wednesday's rematch in Fulton, unfortunately, it was the Indians who picked up the victory as Southwest fell 20-25, 25-23, 16-25, 16-25.

"We played better tonight at the beginning of the match," Southwest head coach Chris Laird said. "Set 1 we had a chance to win but it got away from us. Set 2 we played better and had good connections. Itawamba played better in the third and fourth sets and I think we were gassed from all of the rallies."

The Bears (5-19, 2-11 MACCC) got off to a positive start against the Lady Indians taking a lead until the later stages of the opening set. However they could not close the deal in the end as the hosts took the first set.

It was more of the same in the early stages of the second set but a great deal of the Southwest success came from Reagan Robinson who had a couple of key plays in an ace around the midpoint of the match followed by a kill for the final point of the second set which was claimed by the visitors.

The momentum built from the win in the second set, unfortunately, could not be carried over into the third as the Lady Indians rallied to take the frame.

Southwest continued to fight but could not find the same magic it had earlier in the contest as Itawamba took the fourth set to claim the match.

The Bears will be back in action on Monday, hosting East Central at 6 p.m.
