Regardless of the sport, anytime the Bears face the Co-Lin Wolves, they know that the word 'rivalry' will be presented. And this week, on the gridiron, it will be no different as Southwest and Co-Lin face off Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Wesson.
Southwest head coach Cliff Collins said that his team is prepared for the challenge that the Wolves present.
"We know that it is a rivalry for both schools, we are located about 30 miles apart," he said. "It is a big week for us. We just have to go out and play the way that we are capable of playing and do what we are supposed to do."
The Bears (0-4, 0-2 MACCC South) and the Wolves (2-2, 1-1 MACCC South) enter this week's game coming off of tough losses as the Bears fell 55-36 to Gulf Coast while the Wolves found themselves on the short end of a 21-12 decision at Jones.
The Wolves, who Collins said runs an 11 or 12 personnel on offense, are led by sophomore quarterback Will Loy who, thus far, has passed for 392 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on the season. Will Prichard has also logged time as the signal caller in all four contests recording 167 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
The receiving corps is led by Jordan Richardson who has 13 catches for 135 yards and one touchdown. On the ground the duo of Tray Minor and Deantre Jackson Jr. lead the charge with 312 and 250 yards, respectively, with both accounting for three touchdowns apiece.
Sophomore linebacker Malachi Williams is the leading tackler with 23 on the season including five tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and one recovery.
The Bears counter with an offense led by quarterbacks Henry Brewer, Jordan Mills and Quez Goss who have all shined this season. The run game is another three-headed monster with Jalen Williams, Chris Hunter and Tedarrius Aych all toting the rock for the Bears this season. Through the air, two Bears have shined as Damarcco Blanton has 27 catches for 238 yards and two touchdowns while Marcellus Jackson has 23 catches for 337 yards and two scores. Another big weapon is Jordan Scott who has recorded nine catches for 210 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively Jeffery Polk Jr has been the leader with 33 tackles including two for loss and one forced fumble.
Due to the close proximity of the two campuses, Collins believes that this will be like an extra home game for Southwest and is calling on the fans to come out and make their voices heard.
"It (visiting bleachers) is going to be full," he said. "We are going to give them something to cheer about. Be loud, cheer our guys on and let's get this victory."
The Bears and the Wolves kick off Thursday at 6:30 p.m. from H.L. Stone Stadium. Co-Lin will be celebrating Homecoming during the game with the festivities taking place during halftime.
