In one final test before MACCC Conference play begins next week, the Bears played host to Hinds Saturday evening, hoping to build some momentum.
And even though it got off to a positive start, Southwest could not close the deal in the end, falling to the Eagles 3-2.
"It was a scrappy game, and we had a lot of good play today, we did well," Southwest head coach Zach Mills said. "Hinds is a good team; they have been beating everyone else. We knew that it was going to be a good challenge."
The Bears (4-2) got off to a strong start as in just the 7
th minute, Raul Alegre got in position for a quick shot which he made count, scoring a goal and putting the Bears ahead 1-0.
The momentum, unfortunately, did not last as the Eagles got on the board 10:00 later on a penalty kick, tying the match at 1.
Early in the second half, the Bears regained some of that magic shown in the first as in the 45
th minute, Jack Boyd scored following an assist from a Justin Ruiz corner kick, giving Southwest a 2-1 advantage.
As the match wore on, the Bears lost a step. The Eagles not only tied the match once again in the 56
th minute but they added the go-ahead goal with only 10:30 to go.
Southwest tried to regain focus and claw its way back in the match, but was unable to as Hinds escaped with the win.
The Bears open conference play Tuesday night hosting Pearl River at 7 p.m.
