Lady Bears split with host Coahoma

The Lady Bears got off to a strong start in Friday's Game 1 at Coahoma winning 11-1 in five innings but unfortunately could not close the deal in Game 2, falling 6-5 in nine innings.

Afterwards, Southwest head coach Shea Johnson said that not being able to close Game 2 late and get the sweep was heartbreaking.

"The kids are disappointed, I'm disappointed, the coaches are disappointed. You don't want to lose," he said.

In Game 1, the Lady Bears (15-21, 4-16) made a statement early on getting two runs on Maggie Wilks scoring on a wild pitch followed by Erin Acey singling in Presley Dease.

Southwest starter Abbey Pevey also got off to a good start, retiring three of the first four batters that she faced.

She got additional help from her offense in the second as the Lady Bears rallied. With two outs and two runners on, Wilks hit an RBI single to center field scoring Anlyssa Richardson and Shaylee Ingram. Three at bats later, Acey drew a bases loaded walk before Alyssa Leggett brought Dease home on an RBI single to left. Anne Claire Sistrunk followed suit during the ensuing at bat bringing Pevey home on a single to center. When the dust settled, the Lady Bears enjoyed a 7-0 lead.

After Pevey retired the Lady Tigers in order in the second, the offense shined once again in the third. Dease hit a double to left allowing Wilks and Morgan Gras to touch home increasing the Southwest advantage to 9-0.

Coahoma answered back with a run in the third but Southwest plated two more in the fifth on another Wilks RBI single followed by a fielder's choice hit by Pevey which made the score the eventual final.

Wilks led the charge for the Lady Bear offense going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Dease went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Acey also finished with two RBIs.

Pevey pitched 3.0 innings giving up only two hits, one run (earned) and one walk while striking out one. Karleigh Daze' came on and pitched the remaining two innings giving up only a hit and a walk while striking out one.

In Game 2, Southwest once again struck first as Acey sent an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall for her second home run of the season.

The 1-0 advantage lasted until the third inning when the Lady Tigers took a 3-1 lead following a three-run home run.

Lauren Mounce came on to pitch in the fourth, relieving Daze' who got the start and struck out six. Mounce continued to add to the strikeout total, striking out the side.

Over the next few innings, the Lady Bears had difficulty trying to find its rhythm offensively. Facing their final three outs, they got into a groove. Pevey led off the seventh with a double and was replaced on the base paths by Ingram who scored two at bats later when Wilks singled her in making it a 3-2 game. Two at bats later, Alyssa Leggett roped a double down the left field line scoring Dease and tying the game at 3.

In the eighth, Gabby Carr launched the first pitch of the inning for a solo home run, her first in the college ranks.

Despite the 4-3 lead, Southwest could not close out Coahoma who took advantage of a Lady Bear mistake to plate a run tying the game at 4 and forcing another inning.

In the ninth, Southwest once again jumped ahead on a Sistrunk RBI single making it a 5-4 lead. But Coahoma not only tied the game in the bottom half of the inning but got the walk-off RBI single to take the win.

Mounce struck out 12 over 5.1 innings giving up only three hits, three runs (two earned) and one walk.

Carr led the offense with a home run, a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

The Lady Bears will be back in action on Monday hosting Mississippi Delta at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
