Lady Bears fall short at No. 15 Hinds

Despite getting off to positive starts Thursday in both games at No. 15 Hinds, the Lady Bears unfortunately couldn't keep it going as they fell to the Lady Eagles losing Game 1, 8-3 and Game 2, 3-1.

"I am proud of the fight of the kids. We made some base running errors that I believe hurt us more than anything," Southwest head coach Shea Johnson said. "We had some opportunities and got doubled up and made some mistakes, base-runnning wise. As far as the girls coming together, I liked it."

The games were played at Belhaven University after being moved from Hinds due to a power outage.

In Game 1, the Lady Bears (13-17, 2-12 MACCC) plated the first run of the game in the first inning when Liberty Gillihan — who got on base via a double — was brought home when ensuing batter Presley Dease singled to right.

But the Lady Eagles answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the first, putting Southwest down 3-1.

A Shaylee Ingram sacrifice fly in the second inning kept the Lady Bears close, pulling them within one at 3-2.

But Hinds once again had an answer with four runs, increasing its lead to 7-2.

Dease once again played a vital role for Southwest during her next at bat as she stepped up in the third and brought home another run on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Erin Acey and making it a 7-3 game.

The Lady Eagles pushed a run across in the third once again making it a five-run deficit for the Lady Bears.

Southwest kept fighting but couldn't get over the hump as Hinds pulled out the win.

Gillihan and Ingram led Southwest with two hits apiece. The Lady Bears out-hit the Lady Eagles 10-6.

In Game 2, once again the Lady Bears struck first with a single run in the top of the first. Abbey Pevey grounded out to second allowing Acey to race home giving Southwest a 1-0 advantage.

Hinds scratched a run across in the second on an RBI double, tying the game at 1. That score stayed true over the next 4 ½ innings but unfortunately it was Hinds who broke the tie, plating a run each on back-to-back at bats putting Southwest down 3-1.

The Lady Bears put at least one runner on in each of the final two innings but they could not get them home as the Lady Eagles hung on to win.

Acey led the Lady Bears with two hits.

Southwest will be back in action on Saturday as they make the drive to Scooba to face East Mississippi at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
