Bear Baseball falls to No. 3 Pearl River, edges Mississippi Delta

Even though the start to the day did not go in the favor of the Bears, they were happy with the ending as they rebounded from a tough 10-3 loss to No. 3 Pearl River in Game 1, picking up a 3-2 win over Mississippi Delta in Game 2.

"I was glad to get the win there, we need to get as many as we can get," Southwest head coach Jack Edmonson said. "The pitching did great, and the defense didn't make an error in the second game. If we do that, we are going to be tough to beat."

In Game 1, the Bears (12-13) had difficulty trying to get their offense established as they made contact in the first inning but hit into three-consecutive groundouts.

Southwest fell behind in the second as Pearl River pushed three runs across.

The Bears tried to answer in the third putting two runners on but could not get them home. They fell in a deeper hole in the fifth as Pearl River added five more runs putting Southwest down 8-0.

The visitors added two more in the seventh, but Southwest had an answer to the latest scores.

In the bottom half of the seventh, pinch-hitter Andrew Burgess got on base via an error. Later in the inning, he scored when Gage Hinnant singled to right. Next up was Davis Knight who doubled to right, scoring Gavin Bledsoe and Hinnant.

Unfortunately, the rally halted as Knight was thrown on the base paths for the third out, ending the game.

Knight led the Bears with two hits and two RBIs.

In Game 2, Southwest starter Noah Russ was locked into a pitcher's duel with Delta starter Colby Lafayette through the first four innings of the game.

"I was really comfortable out there, I was just trying to locate my pitches the best that I could and work on getting outs," said Noah who went 4.0 innings, giving up only two hits, no runs and no walks while striking out five.

The Bear offense then broke through the scoreless streak. Jake Meilstrup led off the inning with a double and scored during the ensuing at bat when Nolan Walther reached on an error and advanced to third. He scored during the next at bat on a passed ball. Later in the inning, Colson Thompson made it a 3-0 game in favor of Southwest after hitting an RBI triple to right scoring Marcus Jackson. Jackson got on base via a walk, breaking the school career walks mark with his 50th.

Despite having the momentum, it unfortunately did not last as the Trojans got a two-run double cutting into the Southwest lead and making it a 3-2 game.

Myles Green came on in the seventh and even though Delta got the tying run to second base, he shut the door on the on the opportunity, striking out the next two batters preserving the win for the Bears.

"I just wanted to come in, close the game and give my team the W," Green said. "I just try to come in and do my job every time I step on the mound."

Green went 1.0 inning giving up only one walk and striking out two.

The Bears have a quick turnaround as they will host Delgado Thursday at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
