Bears unable to get past host Meridian

The Bears entered Wednesday's doubleheader at Meridian hoping to carry over the momentum built from Saturday's big Game 2 win over Mississippi Delta. But they could not get past the Eagles losing Game 1, 5-1 and Game 2, 10-4.

"I thought that we played pretty decent baseball and they got did a good job getting hits and keeping us from scoring multiple runs when we had guys on base," Southwest head coach Jack Edmonson said. "I thought that we played solid baseball and we just got beat."

In Game 1, the Bears (15-24, 3-9 MACCC) tried to get their offense established early and put two runners on in the first but could not get them home.

Unfortunately, the Eagles responded by taking advantage of a Southwest error to score their first run of the game in the bottom half of the inning.

Over the next three innings, both teams were mostly held in check as Southwest starter Collin Netto continued to shine as he and his defense battled out of a few jams.

But Meridian got into a rhythm in the fifth plating two additional runs making it a 3-0 deficit for Southwest.

After the Bears were unable to respond, they fell in a deeper hole when the Eagles added two more in the fifth increasing the deficit to 5-0.

Southwest lit up its side of the scoreboard in the 8th when Marcus Jackson singled to center and scored during the ensuing at bat when Reed Duthu followed suit. The momentum, unfortunately, couldn't continue as the Eagles got out of the inning and sealed the win the following inning.

Duthu led the Bears with two hits and an RBI.

In Game 2, Bear starter Peyton Purdue got off to a great start retiring the side in order while picking up two strikeouts.

But in the second inning, the Eagles got into a groove and pushed five runs across the plate putting the Bears down.

Southwest responded in the top of the third. With two outs and Lane Steinwinder on via a double, Jackson tripled to right bringing Steinwinder home and making it a 5-1 game. Next up was Duthu who continued to have a good day with an RBI single, scoring Jackson and pulling the Bears within three.

The Bears inched closer in the fifth as Jackson scored on an RBI single from Cody Presley making it a 5-3 game.

After Meridian scratched a run across in the fifth, Southwest responded with another run in the sixth when Nolan Walther scored on a wild pitch once again putting the Bears within two at 6-4.

The Eagles, unfortunately, pulled away in the bottom half of the inning with four runs making the score the eventual final.

Jackson led the Bears with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Presley also had two hits and an RBI.

The Bears return home to host Itawamba on Friday at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
