Bear Baseball takes down Co-Lin, falls to Hinds

Not even 24 hours removed from a hard-fought win over Nunez, the Bears got right back at it Wednesday with a contest against Co-Lin followed by one with Hinds, both in non-conference action. Even though the Bears battled back and showed great resilience, picking up an 8-4, 11-inning win over the Wolves, they unfortunately couldn't keep it going in the nightcap, falling 7-2 to the Eagles.

"I thought that we did a good job of competing all day," Southwest head coach Jack Edmonson said. "I thought that we played hard, I thought that we were locked in"

Matthew Bienvenu got the start for the Bears (10-11) in Game 1 and got into some trouble early on as the Wolves pushed three runs across putting Southwest in a hole. But he battled back and prevented Co-Lin from inflicting any further damage.

He settled down and got into rhythm in the second inning retiring the side in order while recording a strikeout.

His offense provided help in the third. With Nolan Walther and Reed Duthu on base via a hit batter and walk, respectively, Tyler Otts delivered with a single to center, scoring Walther. Next up was Colson Thompson who hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing Duthu home, making the score 3-2.

The Bears pulled even the following inning when Walther hit into a fielder's choice which resulted in a Co-Lin error allowing Cody Presley to score, tying the game at 3.

After Bienvenu had yet another near-flawless inning, his offense helped provide Southwest's first lead of the game in the fifth. Marcus Jackson led off with a triple and scored during the ensuing at bat when Otts hit a sacrifice fly to left putting the Bears ahead 4-3.

The Wolves pulled even in the sixth following an RBI double.

Myles Green came on in relief and picked up where Bienvenu left off keeping the Wolves at bay.

After the game went into extra innings, Southwest broke through in the 11th. Gage Hinnant and Davis Knight led off the inning with singles before pinch-hitter Gavin Bledsoe joined them on base after getting hit by a pitch.

Two batters later, Duthu reached base via an error which plated two runs and put Southwest up 6-4.

Later in the inning, an Otts fielder's choice brought home one another run before Thompson followed up with an RBI single during the ensuing at bat making the score 8-4.

Green shut down the Wolves in the bottom half of the inning, preserving the win for Southwest.

Afterward, Edmonson praised Green for his pitching in the contest.

Bienvenu went 5.0 innings giving up only five hits, three runs (all earned) and three walks while striking out six. Green, who got the win, went 6.0 innings giving up only five hits, one run (earned) and no walks while striking out eight.

Offensively, Knight, Jackson and Walther all finished with two hits apiece.

In the nightcap, the Bears carried over some of that momentum from the earlier win and struck first. Trace Roy singled to right scoring Otts and Jackson giving Southwest an early 2-0 advantage.

But in the bottom of the second, Hinds responded, scratching four runs across putting Southwest down 4-2.

The Eagles added three more in the third and the Bears could not answer back.

Duthu and Roy led the Bears with two hits apiece with the latter adding two RBIs.

Southwest returns home Friday to host Lansing CC at 6 p.m.
