Going into Saturday's road contest at Pensacola State, the Bears were hoping for their fifth-consecutive win. But Southwest could not close the deal in the end, dropping a heartbreaker to the host Pirates 68-67.
"We just needed to make one or two more plays here or there. It could have been that last possession it could have been somewhere else. We just came up one play short," Southwest head coach Corey Schmidt said.
The Bears (6-5) displayed a very balanced attack. Four players finished in double-figures in scoring, led by Tylik Weeks who posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. LeVionne Lindsey and Fazl Oshodi had 13 points apiece and Josh Schonback recorded 11.
After a fierce battle with the Pirates, the Bears found themselves down late in the contest. But Southwest showed great resiliency inching its way back into the contest before jumping ahead by one with :12 to go. The Pirates managed to answer around :07 later taking a 68-67 lead. The Bears tried to answer on the other end but were unable to get the basket they needed.
Southwest will be back in action on Thursday, facing Bishop State at 7:30 p.m. in Bay Minette, AL.
