Bears shut down Baton Rouge Post Grad in home opener

After a bit of a roller coaster start to the regular season, the Bears opened up their home slate Thursday night with a convincing 113-79 win over the Baton Rouge Post Grad Academy Aces.

"It is always good when you get a win," Southwest head coach Corey Schmidt said. "We played really well offensively. We had a lot of guys who contributed. This is a game where we wanted to get a lot of guys involved."

The Bears (2-2) had nine different players score including a team high 21 from freshman Fazl Oshodi. He contributes his big night to a simple message delivered by Coach Schmidt before the game.

"Execution," he said. "Our coach told us before the game to execute on offense and defense. Our main point in the game was to execute on both ends and that is what we did."

While Oshodi finished as the top scorer for the Bears, fellow freshman Jaylen Haliburton helped get the Bears going in the right direction early with eight of Southwest's first 19 points.

Not long afterward, Josh Schonback got into the act with a 3-pointer and a field goal on back-to-back possessions. The latter of the two scores came with 10:28 to go in the first half and gave the Bears a 31-11 advantage.

Later in the half three-point plays from Schonback and Tylik Weeks were bookends to an 8-0 run which also included a make from Hami Ndiaye.

Southwest went on an 8-2 run to close out the first half of play. The run included a make at the buzzer from Jay Kennedy as the Bears took a 58-29 lead into the locker room at the half.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Bears got back-to-back makes from Weeks early, the second of which was an alley-oop which not only brought the many Southwest fans in attendance on their feet in excitement but also gave the hosts a 66-33 advantage.

A few minutes later, Shomari Jenkins made his presence known with two 3-pointers helping the Bears put more distance between themselves and the Aces.

Down the stretch, the Bears continued to flex their muscle on both ends of the floor as the Aces had difficulty slowing them down.

In addition to Oshodi's 21 points, Weeks posted 20 while Schonback had 16, Haliburton tallied 13, Kennedy recorded 11 and Trenton Davis 10.

Southwest shot 19-of-28 from the free throw line.

The Bears will be back in action on Monday as they host Lee College at 6 p.m.
