The Bears entered Tuesday's road contest at Delgado hoping to get over last week's tough loss at Northwest Florida. But struggles on both ends of the floor proved to be too much for the Bears to overcome as they were edged by the host Dolphins 61-59.
"I thought that we struggled to get stops early. They (Delgado) scored 24 points in the first 11:00 of the game," Southwest head coach Corey Schmidt said. "Then we started getting stops and they only scored 37 in the last 29:00. But throughout the whole game, we just struggled to score and put the ball in the hole."
Following a slow start through the first few minutes of the contest, the Bears (8-6) got into a bit of a rhythm pulling within two on a 3-pointer from Tylik Weeks. Southwest pulled even closer around the halfway point of the first half, but could not get over the hump and take the lead.
A 7-0 run over the next few minutes of play put the Bears behind the 8-ball temporarily but they regained their composure and pulled within one once again with just under 6:00 to go following another make from Weeks.
Southwest trailed 35-26 at the half.
Despite being down, the Bears kept putting up a fight. About halfway through the second half, Southwest rallied once again and this time it resulted in a lead. At the 7:24 mark Deon Brown splashed-in a 3-pointer putting the Bears ahead 50-48. The momentum was short-lived however as the Dolphins tied the game once again.
A 7-2 run by Southwest gave the Bears their largest lead of the night at five. Down the stretch Delgado tied the game before Weeks connected on yet another layup making it a 59-57 lead for Southwest
The Dolphins quickly answered back and after the Bears were unable to follow suit Delgado got one last basket with :10 to go which proved to be the game-winner for the hosts.
Weeks led Southwest with 20 points. Brown and Lombard both finished with 12 points while Jahshawne Joseph had eight points along with a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Bears return home to host Hinds, Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
