Bears top Holmes for third-consecutive conference win

The loss to Jones on Sept. 15 in the conference opener is now even further in the rear-view mirror for the Bears after they put together a winning formula in the second half of Tuesday's road match topping Holmes 3-0 in Ridgeland. It marks the third-consecutive conference win for Southwest.

Bear head coach Zach Mills said that it may have taken a little bit of time but his team made the right adjustments at halftime before ramping-up its play.

"Maybe just getting used to how the field was playing and how Holmes was just so compact," Mills said. "We were trying to shoot through them so at the half we were talking about how to open them up and make it a little more clear."

After neither the Bears (6-1-2) nor the Bulldogs were able to light up their respective sides of the scoreboard through the first 45:00 of play, both teams tried desperately to be the one to strike first in the early stages of the second half.

Southwest broke the scoreless drought in the 58th minute as Brayden Green set up Sergio Padin for a goal giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

In the 84th minute, sophomore goalkeeper Loan Marin showed that he can do more than be a wall after sending a goal kick not only the distance of the pitch but past the Holmes keeper, notching the second score on the evening for the Bears. Defensively, Marin finished with four saves on the evening.

Just five minutes later, Southwest rounded out its scoring as Padin recorded not only his second goal of the evening but also his fourth in the past two matches.

The Bears return to action on Friday with a 3:00 road contest at Co-Lin.
