Bears fight hard, but fall 81-78 at Hinds in Region tournament

The Bears' season came to a premature end Tuesday night in Utica as the host Hinds Bulldogs emerged on top, 81-78, in their NJCAA Region XXIII tournament matchup.
 
With the loss, the Bears end the year at 8-10. Hinds moved to 14-2.
 
The game was nip and tuck through most of the first half with neither team holding more than a five-point lead. But, trailing 20-19 with 10:43 on the clock, the Bears suddenly caught fire.
 
Highlighted by four three pointers from Tada Stricklen, the Bears went on a 27-8 run to move to a 46-28 lead with 2:12 showing. The Bear would go on to take a 48-35 advantage into intermission.
 
The Bulldogs began to find their way as the second half opened. Outscoring the Bears 28-13, the hosts took a 63-61 lead with 9:27 left in the game.
 
But, the Bears refused to give in. With Mazae Blake scoring six points, the Bears went on a 12-3 run to regain the lead, 73-66, with 6:59 remaining.
 
The Bulldogs then outscored the Bears 7-0 to tie the game at 73-73 with 4:17 to play.
 
A Xyshan Jenkins bucket with 3:59 on the clock put the Bears back in the lead, 75-73.
 
The Bulldogs then moved out to a 79-76 lead with 0:18.7 on the clock. The Bears had a chance to tie the game at the free throw line with 0:3.6 left, but it was not to be as Hinds held on for the win.
 
Stricklen led the Bears' offense with 22 points in the game. Blake followed with 12 points while Jenkins finished the night with 10 points.

The Bears made 11 of 15 free throws.
 
The Bulldogs' Jordan Johnson scored 24 points to lead all scorers. He and his teammates combined to go 24-31 at the free throw line.
