The Bears dropped their final road game of the regular season Thursday night in Poplarville as they fell to the 9th-ranked Pearl River Wildcats, 89-64, in MACCC action.

The game was close through most of the first half. A Querrion Gadsonthree pointer had the Bears up 3-0 early in the contest.

Minutes later, Pearl River took a 15-10 lead. The Bears then outscored their hosts 8-0 to go up 18-15 with 11:14 left in the first half.

With 5:30 on the clock, a Lafollette Bogan basket brought the Bears into a 27-27 tie.

Pearl River went on a 15-0 run to close out the half and take a 42-27 lead into intermission.

The Bears (7-9, 6-8) were unable to get any closer than 45-33 in the second half as Pearl River pulled away to secure the win.

"Pearl River shot the lights out along with a 17-0 run to close out the first half," said Bears head coach Bryan Bender. "(This) put us in a difficult scenario to make a comeback where we were forced to press and mix it up to get back into the game. They beat us on the glass and we struggled to guard one-on-one in the post. We valued the ball well tonight and played a great first 15 minutes of the first half."

"As we head into the (NJCAA Region 23) playoffs, we will celebrate our sophomores Tuesday night," Bender went on, "and send them off the right way. They have been high character kids, will get their associates degree this spring and deserve credit for their hard work in the classroom."

Gadson topped the Bears' offense with 14 points. Tada Stricklen was also in double figures with 13 points.

The Bears went 9-13 at the free throw line.

Pearl River (10-1, 10-1) was led by Jaronn Wilkens' 19 points. He and his teammates hit 11 of 20 free throws.

The Bears close out the regular season at home on March 23 when they host Faith Prep. Tipoff is set for 6:00.
