Lady Bears split opening-day road twinbill with Baton Rouge

The Lady Bears opened the 2021 softball season Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader split at Baton Rouge Community College, getting a 9-5 game-two win after falling 7-4 in the opener.
 
The Lady Bears trailed 2-0 after an inning of the nightcap. They tied the game at 2-all in the top of the 2nd when Shelby Mason blasted a pitch over the left field wall for the first of her two hits in the game. Scoring ahead of Mason was Anna Claire Crow.
 
Crow and Ashleigh Rowland both notched  two-RBI singles in the top of the 3rd frame to put the Lady Bears on top 6-2. Crow would later add a third base hit.
 
BRCC added a pair of runs in their half of the 5th inning and a solo run in the bottom of the 6th to trim the Lady Bears' lead to 6-5.
 
The Lady Bears sealed the deal with three runs in the top of the 7th. Halle Jenkins hit a two-run homer-scoring on the play was Bailey Buckley, on base with her second hit of the game-and Rowland, on base with a triple (she also doubled in the game) scored on a ground out.
 
Jensen Gremillion picked up the win in the circle, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk in six innings of work. She struck out five batters.
 
Mel Lewis had a pair of singles in the game for the Lady Bears.
 
BRCC led 7-0 in the opener before the Lady Bears got on the scoreboard.
 
In the top of the 6th, an RBI double from Nan Galtin and a run-scoring single from Buckley cut the Lady Bears' deficit to 7-2 (Buckley would later add a double).
 
An RBI triple by Jenna Brock and RBI base hit from Lewis gave the Lady Bears their final runs of the game. Lewis also had a double in the game.
 
Jade Latham took the loss in the circle for the Lady Bears. In 3.1 innings, she surrendered seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and a walk. She struck out four batters.
 
Jenkins had a pair of base hits in the game.
 
The Lady Bears return to the diamond, and make their home debut, on February 5, with a 2:00/4:00 doubleheader against Holmes Community College.
