Bears win home debut over East Central, 87-83

The Bears made it 2-0 on the young season as they led virtually from start to finish and withstood a tough challenge from East Central to pick up an 87-83 win Thursday night.
 
A Mykayle Carter three pointer gave the Bears an early 3-0 lead and they would never trail the entire night.
 
After East Central tied the game at 16-16 with 13:40 on the clock, a Walker Moreland trey and Lafollette Bogan layup served as bookends to a 22-8 run that gave the Bears a 38-23 lead with 5:30 to play in the half.
 
East Central (0-2) then outscored the Bears 11-2 the rest of the half to leave the Bears on top 40-34 at intermission.
 
In the second half, a Querrion Gadson three-point play gave the Bears a 47-40 lead with 17:02 left to play.
 
With the Bears on top 49-40, East Central went on a 13-4 run to knot the game at 53-all.
 
Six points from Tada Stricklen and four from Michael Barber then helped the Bears to a 16-0 run that left them with their largest lead of the night, 69-53, with 7:23 on the clock.
 
East Central was not quite ready to call it quits, however, as an 18-9 run by the visitors narrowed the Bears' lead to 85-80 with 0:7.9 left.

That would be too little, too late, however, for East Central as the Bears went on to claim the win.
 
"I never felt the game was out of reach," said Bears head coach Bryan Bender. "They made some runs, we made some runs. We were fortunate to make the last run. It just takes maturity from start to finish. Regardless of who you're playing, you've got to give your best every time."
 
Stricklen topped the Bears' offense with 18 points on the night. Barber ended the game with 16 points while Carter and Gadson both finished with 11 points.

The Bears went 19-23 at the free throw line.
 
East Central's Demajion Topps led all scorers with 31 points. He and his teammates made 13 of 15 free throws.
 
The Bears return to action on February 1 when they travel to Utica to take on Hinds Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00.
