Bears sweep visiting Highland

The Bears used outstanding pitching, timely hitting and made the most of their scoring opportunities Saturday afternoon to sweep the visiting Highland Community College Cougars, 6-0 and 5-2.
 
The Bears took a 5-0 lead in the opener in their half of the 3rd inning. Britt Netterville provided the big stick of the inning when he lined a double into right field to score three runs. He later scored on an error.
 
A bases-loaded walk to Keith McKigney in the bottom of the 5th provided the final run of the game for the Bears (6-9).
 
Rigell Robinson went the distance on the mound to pick up the win. In his seven innings of work, he surrendered five hits and a walk while striking out eight batters.
 
A run-scoring triple from Mason Barker and McKigney's RBI double in the bottom of the 1st gave the Bears a 2-0 lead in the finale. McKigney would later add another double.
 
The score went to 3-0 in the 3rd when Barker, on base via a one-out walk, scored on a Parker Phillips ground out.
 
After Highland (1-7) scored a run in the top of the 5th, the Bears answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-out RBI single from Phillips to make the score 4-1.
 
A Logan Larrimore two-out RBI single, his second hit of the game, in the Bears' 6th increased their lead to 5-1.
 
Highland scored its final run in the top of the 7th.
 
Nicolas Scucchi went five innings on the mound, allowing a run on three hits and a walk, to pick up the win for the Bears. He struck out eight batters.
 
McKigney struck out all three batters he faced in the 7th to pick up the save.
 
DJ Lewis had a double and two singles for the Bears.
 
The Bears take a few days off for Spring Break before returning to the diamond and opening MACJC play on March 14 with a 2:00 home doubleheader against Mississippi Delta.
