Bears drop season-opening twinbill

Despite collecting 17 hits Tuesday afternoon, the Bears began the 2020 season by dropping a pair of games to visiting Baton Rouge Community College, 9-4 and 10-7.
 
In game one, the Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Easton Porter, on base after being hit by a pitch, scored on a Cody Ellzey ground out.
 
BRCC (4-4) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth and added five more in the fifth and two in the sixth to extend their lead to 9-1.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, an RBI single by Britt Netterville and a bases-loaded walk to Braydon Coffey scored a pair of runs to pull the Bears to within 9-3.
 
The Bears picked up the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Parker Phillips led off with a base hit and scored four batters later on a ground out.
 
Jack Hilton took the loss on the mound, giving up a pair of earned runs on three hits and three walks in four innings of work. He struck out three batters
 
Mason Barker had two singles for the Bears.
 
 The Bears took a 3-0 first-inning lead in the nightcap when Netterville doubled to score a run. He later scored on a BRCC error while Logan Larrimore, on base via a two-out walk, reached the plate on a wild pitch.
 
After BRCC plated a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, the Bears answered in the bottom of the frame on an Ellzey double, his second hit of the game, to make the score 4-2.
 
BRCC scored a run in the top of the fifth and exploded for seven in the top of the sixth to move out to a 10-3 lead.
 
The Bears got back into the game in the bottom of the seventh when a bases-loaded error allowed three runs to cross the plate. However, they would be unable to score any additional runs as BRCC held on for the win.
 
Rigell Robinson took the loss on the mound in relief, surrendering five runs on a hit and three walks.
 
Josh Bailey had a pair of hits for the Bears.
 
The Bears return to the diamond Friday afternoon as they host the Mineral Area College Cardinals. The first pitch of the twinbill is set for 2:00.
