Lady Bears split conference-opener with 5th ranked Northeast

The Lady Bears gave the 5th ranked Northeast Mississippi Lady Tigers all they wanted and more Thursday night in Booneville, capturing a 9-3 win in the nightcap after taking the hosts to the brink in a 3-2 loss in the opener.
 
Trailing 1-0 in game two, the Lady Bears (7-3, 1-1) got on the board in the top of the second inning when a Carrington Jefcoat sacrifice fly allowed Madison Gower, on base via a walk, to cross the plate. With two outs, a Northeast error allowed to more runs to score to put the Lady Bears on top 3-1.
 
The Lady Bears extended their lead to 7-1 in the top of the third. A bases-loaded walk to Scottie Metrejean scored Jordan McNabb from third. Two errors resulted in three more runs.
 
With the score 7-3, a Bailey Sartin sacrifice fly put another run on the board for the Lady Bears in the fourth inning and they went on to add the final run of the night in the top of the sixth.
 
Jade Latham went the distance in the circle to get the win for the Lady Bears, giving up three runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out eight batters.
 
McNabb had two singles in the game while Tia Bussey, Madison Newman, Makennah Redd and Sartin each had one hit.
 
Northeast (14-4, 1-1) held a 2-0 lead in game one before the Lady Bears put two runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Terrah Nelson lined a 1-1 pitch down the line past first base to score Bussey and Linley Smith to knot the game at 2-2.
 
The contest remained tied until Northeast's last at bat when the winning run scored on a sacrifice fly.
 
McNabb took the loss in the circle for the Lady Bears, allowing three runs on 11 hits and three walks. Sartin had a double in the game.
 
The Lady Bears are scheduled to return to action on March 10 at Holmes Community College in Goodman. They are set to play Arkansas State's JV squad at 12:00 followed by Holmes at 2:00 and Mississippi Delta at 4:00.
