Bears take two from Highland College

Baseball | 3/8/2019 11:42:00 PM

The Bears swept the visiting Highland College Cougars Friday night, taking game one 6-0 while taking the finale 14-4 in six innings.

An RBI single by Paco Bello helped the Bears (8-5) take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the opener.

In the bottom of the second, Michael Buck drove in a run with a double to right field (the first of his two hits in the game). He then scored on an error to increase the Bears' lead to 4-0.

Tyler White's sacrifice fly made the score 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth.

The Bears closed out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth when Zach Dearman, on base via a fielder's choice, scored on a two-out passed ball.

The win came, in part, thanks to the outstanding pitching of starter Matthew Graves and Gage Kiser. In his five innings on the mound, Graves allowed only two hits and struck out nine batters while walking only two in recording the win. Turning in a quality two innings (2 strikeouts, 1 walk) Kiser was credited with save.

Dearman and DJ Lewis both had two hits in the game while White had one hit.

The Bears jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two thanks to a Buck sacrifice fly and a Will Ford double (the first of his two hits).
Bello then made it 3-0 in the Bears' second with an RBI single.

Highland (1-4) got on the board in the top of the third inning with three runs to knot the score at 3-3. The Bears then responded with a run in the bottom of the frame thanks to Cody Ellzey's RBI two-base hit to make the score 4-3.

Both teams added a single run in the top of the fourth to leave the Bears with a 5-4 advantage. The Bears scored on an RBI single by Bello.

The Bears then put an end to the drama of game two, and closed out the scoring, with nine runs in the bottom of the sixth. Bello had an RBI double and single in the inning. Britt Netterville's second hit of the game, a double, scored two runs and Nathan Yennie had an RBI single. Three errors and a passed ball accounted for the Bears' other runs.

Lane Gordon pitched 2.2 innings in relief, striking out five batters, to pick up the win for the Bears. Lewis and Dearman both singled and doubled in the game while Aaron Ragsdale singled.

After taking time off for Spring Break, the Bears return to the diamond on March 14 when they host the Northwest Rangers in a non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is set for 2:00.
