Lady Bears vs. Holmes

Softball | 3/30/2019 7:10:00 AM

The Lady Bears split an MACJC doubleheader Friday afternoon in Summit with the Holmes Lady Bulldogs, winning game one 12-7 before falling 8-3 in the finale.

A three-run homer from Carrington Jefcoat, the first of her two hits in the game, put the Lady Bears up 3-0 in the first inning of the opener.

Holmes tied the game at 3-all in the top of the second. The Lady Bears regained the lead in the bottom of the frame, 4-3, when Ryleigh McManus led off with a triple and scored on Terrah Nelson's ground out.

Three hits, including Josey Nations' leadoff triple, and a passed ball, led to three runs for the Lady Bears 19-6, 6-4) that increased their lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the third inning. Nations also singled in the game.

After Holmes scored two in the top of the fourth, the Lady Bears answered with five in their half of the inning, with two coming on McManus' two-run homer, to extend their lead to 12-5.

Holmes (6-21, 3-5) picked up the final two runs of the game in the top of the seventh.

Jordan McNabb picked up the win in the circle despite surrendering five runs (all unearned) on nine hits and two walks in five innings.

Madison Newman doubled and singled for the Lady Bears while Tia Bussey had two singles.

A two-RBI double off the bat of Jefcoat gave the Lady Bears a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the finale.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Holmes tied the game in the top of the fourth. They then added three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 7-2 lead.

In the Lady Bears' sixth, McNabb led off with a double, the second of her three hits in the game, and scored three batters later on a Makennah Redd base hit to pull to within 7-3.

Holmes then added a run in the top of the seventh to reach the final score.

Jade Latham took the loss in the circle, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk in six innings. She struck out six batters.

Nelson had a double in the game.

The Lady Bears return to the diamond on April 3 when they host Hinds Community College in a 3:00 conference doubleheader.
