Men's Basketball | 11/9/2019 8:20:00 PM

It took five extra minutes, but behind the 29 points of Goodnews Kpegeol, the Bears overcame a 12-point second half deficit Saturday afternoon in the BRCC Classic to defeat the Mississippi Delta Trojans 76-73 in overtime at Baton Rouge Community College.

The Trojans led the majority of the first half and were on top 32-24 with 2:00 on the clock. They then took a 37-31 advantage into the locker room at intermission.

In the second half, the Trojans continued to hold onto the lead although were unable to put the Bears away.

The score became tied at 66-all with 0:32.7 remaining in regulation. With neither team able to score again before the clock went to all zeroes, the game was into extra play.

The game remained close in the overtime session. With Kpegeol scoring four points and Robert Kendrick nailing what proved to be the game-winning trey, the Bears outscored the Trojans 10-7 to secure the win.

"It was a hard-fought win," said Bears head coach Bryan Bender. "And it was great to see us overcome a 12-point deficit in the second half. (It) was another big region win against a scrappy Delta team that played hard from start to finish. Goodnews was hot early and scored 16 first-half points for a career high."

Bender said his team did not shoot the ball "particularly well" but the Kendrick bucket and another huge three pointer from Spencer Rodgers helped the Bears to prevail in the contest.

In addition to Kpegeol, Damian Dearr also scored in double figures with 13 points. The Bears went 18-25 at the free throw line.

Cartisco Brown scored 27 points to pace the Trojans' offense. As a team, the Trojans made 11 of 19 free throws.

The Bears remain on their season-opening road swing on November 14 when they visit the Northwest Mississippi Rangers in Senatobia. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00.
