In a game that in the end was not as close as the final score might indicate, the Bears dominated host Baton Rouge Community College 98-87 Friday night in the first round of the BRCC Classic.

The teams traded baskets in the early going with two ties and eight lead changes in the first 6:34.

The home team took a 14-13 lead with 13:33 left in the first half. A Damian Dear layup then gave the Bears a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the night, 15-14, with 13:26 on the clock.

A Robert Kendrick bucket with 5:16 on the clock gave the Bears their largest lead of the half, 33-18. A pair of dunks from Damian Dear just before the end of the half then helped the Bears (2-1) take a 45-33 lead into intermission.

The Bears came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, outscoring BRCC 20-10 to move out to a 65-42 lead with 14:55 left in the game.

Continuing their surge, the Bears gained their largest lead of the night, 81-57, on a Jalon Andrews bucket with 8:50 still to play.

BRCC then began to find the bucket, outscoring the Bears 28-12, to pull to within 93-85 with 0:48 on the clock. That would be as close as they would get, however.

The Bears scored five of the final seven points of the game with Evans' trey as the clock was winding down leaving them with their final margin of victory.

"It was great to get our first region win of the season, against a scrappy Baton Rouge team" said Bears head coach Bryan Bender. "We had a great team effort, especially on the defensive end (and) we were able to convert stops into scores which helped our offense score 98 points."

"Every game this year, you're going to see a different guy fill the scoring column," Bender continued. "Tonight, it was four guys who really filled it up. But, the story of the night was Robert Kendrick in his first career start. He's really worked hard and is really deserving of a career-high 17 points."

Dear and Evans led all scorers with 18 points. Also is double figures was Andrews with 12 points.

The Bears hit 15 of 25 free throws.

Devin Carlin led the BRCC (1-2) offense with 17 points. He and his teammates were 14-24 at the free throw line.

The Bears return to BRCC Saturday afternoon to close out the Classic with a 4:00 matchup against MACJC foe Mississippi Delta.
