Bears come up short at Pearl River

Despite turning in their best overall performance of the year, the Bears came up just short Saturday afternoon in Poplarville as they fell to the host Pearl River Wildcats 17-16 on a late field goal.
 
Pearl River took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Dymarcus Griffin completed a four-play, 70-yard drive with a 52-yard scoring run with 8:59 on the clock. Gayden Hence kicked the extra point.
 
The score went to 7-3 with 4:15 left in the quarter when the Bears' Brazos Webb made good on a 34-yard field goal to close out a 10-play, 58-yard march.
 
With 12:08 left in the second quarter, Da'Bryan Magee hit Gerkithis McCray on a short pass that turned into a 92-yard touchdown. The PAT was no good, leaving the Bears with a 9-7 advantage.
 
An eight-play, 66-yard march by the Bears was capped, with 6:44 showing on the clock, by a 29-yard Magee to Vakeilon Campbell touchdown pass. Webb booted the PAT to give the Bears a 16-7 lead which they carried into intermission.
 
After a scoreless third quarter, Pearl River (2-5, 1-4 MACJC South) scored the only points of the final quarter.
 
Jaylen Wilson ended a 10-play, 42-yard drive with a four-yard scamper into the end zone with 6:30 left in the game. Hence added the PAT to draw the hosts to within 16-14.
 
The Bears' slim lead held until, with only 0:20 remaining, Hence booted a 21-yard field goal for what proved to be the winning score.
 
Magee led the Bears' 379-yard offensive attack by going 3-6 through the air with 134 yards and two touchdowns.
 
Zarious Keyes topped the Bears' ground game with 88 yards on 20 carries. Campbell had 52 yards on six carries.
 
The Bears (0-7, 0-5, MACJC South) had 16 first downs in the game and were penalized seven times for 55 yards. Jack Runnels averaged 28 yards on two punts.
 
Griffin paced the Pearl River offense with 106 rushing yards, and a touchdown, on 15 carries. Terrence Humphrey went 9-20 passing for 72 yards. He was intercepted twice.
 
Pearl River had 18 first downs on the afternoon and was penalized three times for 22 yards. Hence averaged 38.5 yards on two punts.
 
The Bears return home for their next contest as they host the Itawamba Indians at John I. Hurst Stadium on October 17. Kickoff has been changed to 6:30.
