Men's Basketball | 1/7/2019 9:54:00 PM

After a tight first half that saw four ties and three lead changes, the Bears dominated things in the second half and ended Monday night  to being 2019 play with a 95-81 home win over the Mississippi Delta Trojans.

The win, their fourth straight, moved the Bears to 9-1 on the season. The Trojans dropped to 5-7.

The Bears fell behind early before taking a 3-2 lead on a Bob Boyd three pointer with under 2:00 off the first-half clock. A Jalon Andrews bucket with 12:53 on the clock capped an 11-3 run by the Bears that left them with a 16-9 advantage.

The teams then traded buckets for several minutes before the Bears went on top 29-28 with 5:29 left in the half. The Trojans then outscored the Bears 8-6 to take a 36-35 lead at the end of the first 20:00.

Atticus Taylor laid the ball in the goal with 19:32 left in the second half to begin a 20-3 run that left the Bears on top 55-39.

The Bears' lead went to double figures, 48-38, on a Lincoln Smith short-range jumper with 16:30 left in the game. After a pair of baskets from the Trojans that cut the Bears' lead to 12, a pair of Damian Dear free throws moved the score to 57-43 with 12:47 left in the game.

With 8:23 on the clock, a layup from Smith gave the Bears their biggest lead of the night, 72-51. The Trojans would not be able to come any closer than 11 the rest of the way as the Bears secured the win.

"It was a great team win tonight," said Bears head coach Bryan Bender. "Everyone (on the Bears' roster) scored and our guys played extremely hard from start to finish."

"The big run at the start of the second half was huge," Bender continued, "and set the tone for the game, especially defensively. A 9-1 non-league record is a great start for a team with 12 new guys. We are excited to restart divisional play and hopefully play in front of a packed house Thursday
night."

Smith topped the Bears' offense with 20 points. Dear scored 16 point while Boyd and Taylor both scored 10. The Bears made 17 of 22 free throws.

Darius Jackson led the Trojans' offense with 19 points. He and his teammates combined to go 20-25 at the free throw line.

The Bears return to South Division play at home Thursday night with a 7:15 contest against the Meridian Eagles.
