The 5th ranked Northwest Mississippi Rangers took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they defeated the host Southwest Bears 51-6 Thursday night in John I. Hurst Stadium.

With the loss the Bears fell to 1-1 on the young season while the Rangers moved to 2-0.

A nine-yard run by Chris Calvert, and Chris Taylor's PAT kick, closed out an eight-play, 61-yard drive with 7:48 left in the opening quarter to put the visitors on top.

The Rangers would add 24 points in the second quarter to hold a commanding 31-6 lead at the end of the first half.

The Bears picked up their only points of the night with 2:10 left in the second quarter when Anthony Jones hauled in a pass from Da'Bryan Magee and raced into the end zone for a 37-yard touchdown to end a seven-play, 89-yard march. The extra point kick was blocked.

Twenty additional points would be scored by the Rangers in the second half to give them their final margin of victory.

"I thought we competed much better in the second half than we did in the first half," said Bears' head coach Tim Stowers when asked for any positives from the game.

"There are a lot of areas where we need to improve," Stowers continued. "We're running some simple plays and try to get some execution, but the problem is we're not able to run (the) simple plays. So, we've got to stay simple. We've got to keep building on fundamentals and play for the future."

The Bears where held to 174 yards of offense on the night. Magee went 9-19 in the passing department for 141 yards and a touchdown with one interception.
Johnny Wilson caught four passes for 47 yards while Jones had two catches for 47 yards with a touchdown. Jeremy Gibson carried the ball six times for 19 yards.

The Bears recorded 12 first downs in the game and were penalized eight times for 55 yards. Jack Runnels punted the ball six times for 40 yards.

The Rangers totaled 419 yards of offense. Jacob Free completed 13 of 22 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown. Calvert carried the ball five times for 41 yards with two scores.

The Rangers picked up 17 first downs in the game and were penalized nine times for 82 yards. Taylor punted the ball four times for 35.3 yards.

The Bears will hit the road for the first time in 2018 on September 13 when they travel to Decatur to face the East Central Warriors (East Central defeated Itawamba 34-28 Thursday night). The game is set for a 6:30 kickoff at Bailey Stadium.
