Bears split twinbill at Hinds

The Bears split an MACJC twinbill with the Hinds Eagles in Raymond Wednesday, withstanding a late rally before taking game one 8-7 then falling 9-8 in the nightcap.
 
The Bears led 7-0 six at bats in the opener. Michael Buck's RBI single made the score 1-0 in the top of the first.
 
In the top of the second, Will Ford sent a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence for his first homer of the season to make the score 3-0.Scoring ahead of Ford was Isaiah Davis, on base via a single.
 
An RBI double from Kyle Singleton and a run-scoring single from Davis made it 5-0 in the top of the third. Davis later added a third hit.
 
Tyler White singled to lead off the top of the fifth. He scored three batters later on Davis' sacrifice to increase the Bears' advantage to 6-0. In the top of the sixth, Buck's two-out solo blast to left, the second of his three hits, put the Bears up 7-0.
 
Hinds (24-18, 10-16) began their comeback attempt in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs to make the score 7-2. Two more runs in the Hinds half of the seventh trimmed the Bears' lead to 7-4.
 
White started the Bears' ninth with his third hit of the game and later scored on an error to put the Bears on top 8-4.
 
Scoring three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Hinds narrowed the Bears' lead to 8-7. Fortunately, that would be the hosts' final run as Jarid Sturgeon took to the mound and struck out the only batter he faced, with the bases loaded, to secure the win and record the save.
 
Ethan Campo picked up the win for the Bears, giving up two runs on eight hits while striking out three batters. Quartez Brown and T Tez Cole both had a single for the Bears.
 
 A single by Buck in the top of the first in game two put the Bears on top 1-0. Hinds then used two singles, a hit batter and a fielder's choice to knot the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame.
 
The Bears (12-27, 8-18) broke loose for five runs in the top of the third to move out to a 6-1 lead. A triple from Brown and singles by Buck and Davis accounted for three of the runs. Buck scored from third on a fielder's choice while Cole scored from third on the front end of a double steal.
 
Hinds sent eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, and scored four runs, to cut the Bears' lead to 6-5.
 
Both teams scored solo runs in the fifth inning, leaving the Bears ahead 7-6. The Bears' run came on Cole's lead-off solo shot over the centerfield fence.
 
Two singles, a double and home run gave Hinds three runs in the bottom of the sixth, and their first lead of the day at 9-7. The Bears cut their deficit to 9-8 on White's solo shot in the top of the seventh, but they would not be able to score further, leaving Hinds with the narrow win.
 
Lane Gordon took the loss on the mound for the Bears, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk in one inning of work.
 
Payton Yawn had two singles for the Bears while Paco Bello doubled.
 
The Bears are scheduled to close out the season in Scooba on Saturday when they visit the East Mississippi Lions. Game one of the conference doubleheader is set for 2:00.
