Gulf Coast takes two from Bears on Sophomore Day

The Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs played the role of spoiler on Sophomore Day Tuesday afternoon in Summit as they picked up 10-0, 4-1 MACJC wins over on in the Bears' final home games of the season. Game one ended after seven innings.
 
The Bulldogs (27-13, 11-11) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one, scoring the only run they would need on their way to the shutout win.
 
Ethan Campo took the loss on the mound for the Bears, giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks in five innings of work. He struck out four batters.
 
T Tez Cole had two singles for the Bears while Payton Yawn and Nathan Yennie each had a hit.
 
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs held a four-run lead before the Bears (9-26, 5-17) avoided the shutout with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Quartez Brown led off the frame with a single and scored three batters later on an Isaiah Davis base hit.
 
The loss came despite the performances of pitchers Matthew Graves and Jarid Sturgeon.
 
In 4.1 innings on the mound, Graves allowed two earned runs on only three hits along with three walks. He struck out two. Sturgeon went 2 innings, also allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out two.
 
Michael Buck had two hits in the game for the Bears while Will Ford and Yawn each had a single.
 
The Bears begin the first of three season-ending road trips Saturday as they take on the Northeast Tigers in Booneville. Game one of the conference doubleheader is set for 1:00.
