The Lady Bears took a big step toward retaining the Coca-Cola Challenge trophy Monday night in Wesson with a 5-1, 14-13 doubleheader sweep of arch-rival Co-Lin. The nightcap went eight innings.

With the win, the Lady Bears climbed to 7-3 on the season. Co-Lin dropped to 3-6.

The Lady Bears took a 3-0 second-inning lead in the opener.
Tia Bussey singled with one out. Later advancing to third, Bussey scored on a Jami Spears bunt hit. The next batter, Ashley Elsensohn, was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Miranda Magee doubled to left field to send Spears and Elsensohn across the plate.

A hit batter, fielder's choice and two singles in the bottom of the fourth allowed Co-Lin to score their only run of the game and make the score 3-1.

The Lady Bears added the final runs of the game in the top of the sixth when
Terrah Nelson singled with one out, moved to second and third on passed balls, and scored on Bussey's second hit of the game. Two batters later, Elsensohn's third base knock of the game scored Bussey.

Kassie Shipley picked up the complete-game win in the circle for the Lady Bears. She surrendered a run on three hits while striking out five batters. Jordan McNabb had a single in the game.

Game two was a wild affair. Jordan McNabb's three-run blast to left put the Lady Bears ahead in the top of the first. Co-Lin then made it 3-1 in the bottom of the frame with a bases-loaded passed ball.

A bases-loaded walk to
Kayla McNabb and Magee's sacrifice fly scored a pair of runs for the Lady Bears in the top of the second to make the score 5-1. The score went to 8-1 in the top of the third with a bases-loaded walk to Melanie Crum and Kayla McNabb's two-RBI single.

After Co-Lin made it 8-2 in their half of the third, the Lady Bears added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.
Carrington Jefcoat walked with one out and scored two batters later on an error that put Nelson on base. Nelson later scored on a passed ball to increase the Lady Bears' advantage to 10-2.

The Lady Bears seemingly put the game on ice in the top of the fifth when Kayla McNabb picked up her third hit of the game, and later scored on a fielder's choice, and Jefcoat and Nelson both drove in a run to make the score 13-2.

But, Co-Lin had other ideas as they sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth, and scored nine runs, to make the score 13-11. They then added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 13-13 and force the extra inning.

The Lady Bears then picked up what proved to be the winning run in the top of the eighth when Kayla McNabb's sacrifice fly allowed Nelson to cross the plate.

Mikaela Smith picked up the win for the Lady Bears. In four innings of work, she gave up five runs on five hits and six walks while striking out two batters. Shipley was given a save.

Bussey had three hits in the game while Elsensohn had picked up two.

The Lady Bears return to the diamond Friday afternoon when they host Baton Rouge Community College. The twinbill is set for a 4:00 start.
