Bears drop a heart-breaker at Co-Lin

Roydell Brown

Men's Basketball | 2/16/2018 12:42:00 AM

A long-range jumper at the buzzer went awry Thursday night, leaving the Bears on the short end of a heartbreaking 73-71 MACJC South Division decision to Co-Lin in Wesson.

The loss left the Bears with a 15-6 overall mark; they remain in fourth place in the South. Division-leading Co-Lin moved to 18-3 and 9-3.

Buckets from
Roydell Brown and Jeremy Harrell gave the Bears a 6-0 lead with 17:28 left in the first half. A 7-2 run, capped by Brown's jumper, then put the Bears on top 20-13 with 11:53 on the clock.

The Bears seemed to be in control of the matter when a 12-2 run, capped by an
Antonio Cowart, Jr.., trey left them with a 34-20 advantage with 7:05 left before the end of the half.

Co-Lin then scored nine straight to pull to within 38-35 with 4:01 showing. The Bears went on to take a 42-38 lead at intermission.

A 9-2 run to open the second half saw Co-Lin take a 47-44 lead with 16:47 left in the game. An 8-0 run then gave the hosts their biggest lead of the game, 57-48, with 11:00 to go.

The Bears trailed 69-60 with 6:24 still to play. Not wanting to give up without a fight, they proceeded to score 11 of the final 15 points of the game, six of them coming from
John Knight III, and pull to within two points, 73-71, with 1:16 remaining. That, unfortunately, would be their last gasp as the missed last-second shot allowed Co-Lin to hold on for the win.

"It's disappointing anytime you lose a game, especially under those circumstances," said Bears head coach Thomas Gray. "I thought we came out and played about as well as we could have the first 10 minutes or so, but we had one or two defensive slips that allowed the momentum to shift in Co-Lin's favor before the (first) half ended."

"I was glad to see the perseverance that our guys showed to be able to have a chance to win the game with the last possession, but, unfortunately, the result wasn't what he had hoped for."

Knight III scored 16 points to lead the Bears' offense. Brown had 11 points and 12 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season while Harrell also scored in double figures with 10 points.
Robert Boyd had six assists. The Bears hit 18 of 26 free throws.

Jonathan Floyd scored 23 points to top the Co-Lin offense. The home team made 15 of 26 free throws.

The Bears return home Monday for the first of a two-game, season-ending home stand with a visit from Hinds. The South Division contest is set for a 7:15 tipoff.
