Lady Bears split doubleheader with Trinity Valley

Jordan McNabb's two-out, two-RBI double in the bottom of the seventh helped the Lady Bears pick up a 5-4 win Thursday afternoon in game two of their doubleheader against the visiting Trinity Valley (TX) College Lady Cardinals. Trinity Valley took game one, 5-0.

The split left the Lady Bears with a 5-3 mark while the Lady Cardinals now stand at 5-6.

Kayla McNabb, on base via a walk, scored on a bases-loaded passed ball to put the Lady Bears on top 1-0 in the first inning of the finale.

The Lady Cardinals then used a single, hit batter and double to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Two more Lady Cardinals crossed the plate in the top of the fifth, leaving the visitors with a 4-1 advantage.

The Lady Bears began their comeback in their half of the sixth when Kayla McNabb again reached base on a walk and later scored on an error.
Miranda Magee, on base with a single, scored on a fielder's choice to make the score 4-3.

In the bottom of the seventh,
Ashley Elsensohn reached on a one-out walk, her second hit of the game, after which Kayla McNabb reached on a fielder's choice. Then, with two outs, Jordan McNabb slashed a 3-1 pitch into left field to send Elsensohn and Kayla McNabb dashing home for the tying and winning runs.

Of her game-winning hit, Jordan McNabb said she was probably "the most nervous I've ever been in my life."

Mikaela Smith pitched a complete game in the circle to record the win. In her seven innings of work, she allowed four runs on six hits while striking out six and walking one.

A single and double resulted in a 1-0 lead for the Lady Cardinals in the top of the fifth in game one. They added another solo run in the top of the sixth with their final three runs coming in the seventh.

Kassie Shipley surrendered a pair of runs on three hits in five innings to take the loss in the circle. She struck out four batters while walking two.

Tia Bussey had two singles for the Lady Bears while Carrington Jefcoatt, Magee and Terrah Nelson each had a single.

The Lady Bears return to the diamond Monday afternoon when they face arch-rival Co-Lin in the opening doubleheader of the Coca-Cola Challenge. Game one is set to get underway at 3:00.
