Overcoming a sluggish start, the Bears remained perfect on the season as they closed out the Southwest/Coca-Cola Classic Tuesday night with a 79-64 win over the Southern-Shreveport Jaguars.

The Jaguars led by as many 13 points in the first half and looked to be on their way to a blowout win. They took a 36-33 lead into the locker room at the end of the first 20:00 of play.

The second half, however, belonged to the home standing Bears (4-0) as they outscored the visitors 46-31. A layup from Jay Malone gave the home team their largest lead of the night, 77-58, with 3:21 left in the game and they went on to claim the 15-point victory.

"Learning to manage a game as a coach and as a young team is important," said Bears head man Bryan Bender. "And, they (the Bears) have to realize that they have to come ready to play from the get go."

"We had a few mistakes that we made early," Bender continued, "and couldn't hit some shots and all of a sudden we were down 13. (At halftime) we talked about playing at our tempo so we started to pick up with our press. Even though we were short two starters tonight, we were still able to overcome some adversity and battle back in the second half and find a way to win."

Malone led the Bears, and all scorers, with 21 points on the night while also recording nine assists. Robert (Bob) Boyd had a season-high 13 points while Avery Diggs also netted 13 points. Lincoln Smith led the Bears on the boards with 11 rebounds.

The Bears hit 11 of 17 free throws.

De'Angelo Smith led the Jaguars with 13 points. The visitors went 8-15 at the free throw line.

The Bears head to Niceville, Florida, for their next games as they face Gulf Coast State College Friday, at 3:30, and top-ranked Northwest Florida State College Saturday night at 7:30.
