Bears defeat Pearl River 1-0, sweep season series

Unlike their previous meeting it did not take extra play, but for the second time this season the Bears overcame the Pearl River Wildcats in a crucial MACJC South Division match, 1-0, Saturday afternoon to sweep the season series. The match, played in Summit, was called due to lightning with just over 8:00 remaining on the clock.

With the win, the Bears (10-2, 4-2) posted their third straight season of at least 10 wins and inched closer to securing a spot in the upcoming MACJC/NJCAA Region 23 playoffs. Pearl River dropped to 9-3, 4-2.

The match was scoreless until the 79:57 mark when Felipe Madero played a through ball to Marcus Connolly. Connolly then beat the Pearl River keeper one-on-one and put the ball in the right corner for the goal.

The Bears' defense turned in another stellar performance against Pearl River and keeper Conner Smothers saved the visitors' only two shots on goal.

"I feel like today was probably one of the better performances we've had," said Bears head coach Alex Brown, "mainly because we made very few mistakes. I would like to have seen us finish off a couple more of the offensive chances we had, but overall we had a great performance and a great win today."

"Obviously, this was a huge game for us," Brown continued. "We have had this game circled on the calendar for a while, so for the boys to show up, limit mistakes and get the win in front of the home crowd is special."

The Bears return to action on October 12 when they visit the Meridian Community College Eagles for a 7:00 Division match.
